What is EVP
EVP stands for electronic voice phenomena. They are sounds recorded on electronic devices that are interpreted as voices or messages from the dead.
The voices are either caught unintentionally or could form part of a contacting session, where people look to have specific questions answered by spirits.
EVP recordings are most often short noises or a very short phrase. While some swear by the clarity of these recordings, others believe that it is mostly personal interpretation as to what is being said.

When did it start?
There was a spiritualist movement between 1840 and 1920. People more openly believed that spirits could be reached through mediums.
Mediums could be anything from a gifted person to an electronic device. American photographer, Attila von Szalay was the first person to try and record the voices of spirits, or at least capture these voices on recordings.
Although he started attempting to record spirits in 1941, he only managed to achieve what he thought was a successful recording in 1956 using a reel-to-reel tape recorder.
He found that many noises were recorded, that weren’t heard by the person recording.
He believed these noises to be voices of the dead. The first few messages were a bit strange, “This is G!”, “Hot Dog, Art!” and “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all!”, so whether these were actual spirits or some intercepted phone conversations, we will never really know.

Auditory pareidolia is when the brain incorrectly reads or interprets random patterns or signals as being familiar.
Regarding EVP, many scientists and non-believers think that the noises or ‘voices’ heard on these recordings are just random noises that people will themselves into hearing meaningful phrases.
The most prominent evidence of this is that the researcher always hears the voice in a language they understand, and not of an unfamiliar language.

The special sound analyzer and GUI pick up on any unusual sound that cannot be heard by humans.

Once you have finished your recording session, you can immediately play it back.

1. Audacity: Highly recommended by the Ghostlytrue.com writer, this software is described as being easy to use. The program is available for Windows, Linux and Mac operating systems. It can record and edit sounds and convert them into MP3 or WAV files. Also, it has the features to cut, copy and mix sounds. Interestingly, this is one of several sound editing programs being packaged as superior EVP software (not by the software company, but by several blogs promoting belief in the paranormal).
