- Cannot start tomcat running through Maven in Eclipse, org.apache.catalina.LifecycleException: Failed to start component StandardEngineTomcat. You should not explicitly include the following dependency in your app: But mark the servlet-api as provided and leave for Tomcat to supply it: It looks like some jar in the project you are deploying.

Setting up Tomcat with eclipse anf CATALINA_HOME setup [message #1694157] | Fri, 01 May 2015 05:34 | jignesh soni Messages: 7 Registered: February 2014 |
| 1) I have downloaded Apache Tomcat zip file in 'C:Userssonij3DesktopApache Tomcat' When I extracted files from it , new dir structure where binary and lib files are is 'C:Userssonij3DesktopApache Tomcatapache-tomcat-6.0.43-windows-x64apache-tomcat-6.0.43lib' Then I clicked on WIndows Service Installer and Tomcat got installed in 'C:Program FilesApache Software Foundation'. what should be CATALINA_HOME ? 2) Is it required to download Apache Tomcat zip file (8 MB size) OR can I directly use Windows Service Installer from 'https://tomcat.apache.org/download-60.cgi' website to install Tomcat without downloading it ? When I am trying to setup eclipse wuth Tomcat Installation Dir as 'C:Program FilesApache Software FoundationTomcat 6.0lib' OR 'C:Userssonij3DesktopApache Tomcatapache-tomcat-6.0.43-windows-x64apache-tomcat-6.0.43lib', I ma getting error message 'The Tomcat installation directory is not valid. It is missing expected file or folder lib/jasper-el.jar' While jasper~el jar is available in both locations. Why am I getting such an error ? How do I set up correct path here ? 3) I have setup CATALINA_HOME as 'C:Program FilesApache Software Foundation' Then I am trying to check version of Tomcat as Quote:'C:Usersnirjari>'DesktopApache Tomcatapache-tomcat-6.0.43-windows-x64apache-tomcat-6.0.43binversion.bat' The CATALINA_HOME environment variable is not defined correctlyThis environment variable is needed to run this program I don't see version.bat in Tomcat Installation path 'C:Program FilesApache Software FoundationTomcat 6.0bin' Then I also tried setting CATALINA_HOME as 'C:UsersnirjariDesktopApache Tomcatapache-tomcat-6.0.43-windows-x64apache-tomcat-6.0.4', 'C:UsersnirjariDesktopApache Tomcatapache-tomcat-6.0.43-windows-x64' AND 'C:UsersnirjariDesktopApache Tomcat', But I am getting same error. So whats wrong with CATALINA_HOME in here ? What should be correct CATlALINA_HOME ? |

| You've got two different things going on: installing Tomcat on the system and setting it up for Eclipse. Installing it as a service is not necessary for its use in Eclipse. CATALINA_HOME should point to the root directory ('apache-tomcat-6.0.43-windows-x64' not 'apache-tomcat-6.0.43-windows-x64lib'), and I'd avoid using one where there are spaces involved. That same directory should also work for Eclipse. The error message mentioned that it couldn't find 'lib/jasper-el.jar'--which means it expects you to point it at a directory that's the parent of 'lib.'

What should be correct > CATlALINA_HOME ? Unless you're planning on really serving up Java pages from your Windows desktop, you don't need to install Tomcat. Just point Eclipse at it (Window -> Preferences -> Server -> Runtime Environment -> Add -> Apache Tomcat v6.0 -> Next -> Browse to C:Userssonij3wherever-you-decide-to-keep-it. Then just launch your web application, to run or to debug, and Eclipse will launch Tomcat for you. You do not need to touch CATALINA_HOME. |
